How do I paint a layer mask in black? Right now, when I paint with the brush tool, I get a grey colour, which doesn't completely conceal the layer underneath. I have attached a screen shot of my set up.

One of Photoshop's most useful shortcuts is 'D'.  When you tape that key it sets the foreground and background colours to black and white.   The X key will swap those colours round.  I suspect they might be Photoshop's most used shortcuts.

The foreground colour is grey, while the background colour is black. Press X to eXchange the fore/back colours
