How to change the default save location for Linked Smart Objects

How to change the default save location for linked smart objects? Every time I convert an embedded smart object to a linked one, I have to reselect the folder manually, because the save location always defaults to a fixed folder instead of the one I chose last time.

When I invoke Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Linked the last Folder I used for this function shows up.

Do you work on Mac or Windows?

Is the task a very frequent one for you and is there a »fixed formula« for the location of the Folder for the Linked Smart Objects in relation to the containing image?

If so a Script might be useful.

How are you converting?

If you open the smart object to resave the embedded .PSB, it’s a new file and will be treated as such. In other words, your preference setting for save location applies:
