how to create a pattern with a slight offset

How do I create a pattern that repeats but not on a grid? I want the pattern to repeat at a 45% angle more or less, and with some overlapping elements. Pattern preview is great but things just repeat in boxes on top of each other. Thanks!

After you create a pattern by selecting the area and choosing Edit > Define Pattern, that becomes a preset in the Patterns panel. If you apply that as, for example, a Pattern fill layer (Layer > New Fill Layer > Pattern), you can customize the Pattern fill layer options (Layer > Layer Content Options, or double-click the layer) which include Angle.

So just define the pattern, and after you apply it to something, edit it to set its Angle to 45 degrees or any other angle you want.
