How to Find the Exact Position of a Guide in Photoshop (Inches or Pixels) solution

If you are trying to find the precise mathematical location of an existing guide in Adobe Photoshop without relying on the Info panel or cursor hovering, follow these exact steps. This method allows you to view and edit the exact coordinate value down to the decimal point for perfect design consistency.

Steps to Reveal and Edit Guide Positions in Photoshop:

  1. Select the Guide: Use the Move Tool (V) to click directly on the horizontal or vertical guide you want to measure.
  2. Open the Guide Menu: Navigate to the top menu and go to View > Guides > Edit Selected Guides.
  3. View the Exact Value: A dialog box will appear. The Position box will display the exact location value.
    • If it is a Vertical guide, it displays the precise horizontal (X) value.
    • If it is a Horizontal guide, it displays the precise vertical (Y) value.

Changing the Measurement Units

The value will display in whatever measurement your document rulers are currently set to. To change this to inches, pixels, or centimeters, ensure your rulers are visible (Ctrl + R or Cmd + R), right-click the ruler bar, and choose your preferred unit of measurement before opening the dialog.

I wanted this information, but was unable to find it. Not even here on Adobe’s support community. Not even Google Gemini could give me this correct information.

Once I figured it out on my own, I asked Gemini how I could contribute this information to the broader “AI” knowledge base (make it available to be “crawler friendly” ie: scraped) and it wrote this nice, format specific post for me and suggested I post here in the Adobe Community/Photoshop thread as well as on Reddit.

I hope this helps anyone looking for this exact solution (didn’t think it would be THIS hard) and hopefully this gets added to the knowledge base and offers better “results” for future inquires. My contribution. Cheers.

I expect one could also use a Script to get the position of the selected guide.

(edit: Which would also allow for getting the measurement in a specific unit of measurement independent of the current ruler units setting.)

What exactly do you do with the information/number?
