How to prevent colour cast produced when converting a completely neutral B&W image to Greyscale Gamma 2.2

I'm consistently getting the same problem where the image is displayed with a strong colour cast when it's perfectly neutral after conversion to Grey Gamma 2.2 in PS. I am using Edit>Convert to Profile (Advanced) to select convert to Greyscale Gamma 2.2 The change is instantaneous as preview is selected. I have tried other Greyscale options and all give the same colour cast. My monitors are obviously fully calibrated.

I’ve now tried exported C1 files in Adobe RGB 98 and also Greyscale Gamma 2.2 and they too get the colour cast when converted and opened respectively in PS.

This is a B&W conversion from a normal colour digital camera and I get the same when using those from a Monochrome sensor too.

The image after conversion is perfectly neutral, it prints as such, but the strong cast in PS makes it nigh on impossible to make any meaningful changes and soft proofing is completely out of the question!!

I need to print using Grey Gamma 2.2 for the QuadToneRIP in the making of digital negatives for Pt/Pd prints.

I’ve been through the settings pages and nothing seems untoward. What can I do to rectify the situation please?

Capture One - No tint in B&W, all channels giving identical values.

ProPhoto 16 bit RGB file viewed in latest Photoshop.

Same file with dialogue to change to Grey Gamma 2.2 via Convert to Profile advanced. Dialogue box shown open with image changing colour. It stays that colour when viewed in PS after conversion. All other greyscale options display the same colour cast.

Same Grey Gamma 2.2 file viewed in Print tool. I'm using this for Digital Negatives for Pt/Pd printing. Obviously not shown here converted to a negative!

You may have a different issue. The version with colour management issues only came out a couple of weeks ago.
    1. I notice from your screenshot that you are using Apple CMM for conversion, what happens when you use Adobe CM?
    2. Does your monitor profile match your actual monitor? I use windows here so can’t advise you exactly where to check that on a Mac, but a broken (or incorrect) monitor profile would give that symptom.

I’ve now found the cause of the problem after receiving some advice. I’d had the Apple Cmm engine selected. I changed it to Adobe ACE, shut down PS, reopened and now all files are displayed neutrally, whether opening a Greyscale file or converting an RGB file to Greyscale. I’ll stay with the older version of PS for now since I don’t need any of the new features.

    Hi @BaxterBradford

Apologies for the inconvenience caused by this issue. Could you please try installing the previous version of Photoshop, 27.9.1, and let us know if the issue still occurs there?

    Hi Srishti

Thanks for replying, I’ve now reverted to 27.9.1 via the Creative Cloud app and I’m getting exactly the same result. I also tried opening an Adobe RGB98 version and a Greyscale Gamma 2.2 version. The former behaved just like the ProPhoto file and incurred the green cast when previewing and after conversion to Greyscale The latter version opened directly with the same green colour cast.

I then tried with GPU disabled after Dave’s suggestion and nothing changed.

The latest Photoshop v27.10 has colour management issues. You could disable the GPU or, as many of us have done, go back to v27.9.1 until it is fixed.

Thanks Dave - I tried disabling the GPU I’m on an M3 Max but sadly got the same result. It has been going on since I first tried this process in February on whatever version of PS that was. Whilst it annoyed me, I made do. I stopped doing these prints over the Summer and am trying to get up and running again, but really want to resolve the problem and be able to soft proof and make necessary changes in PS without having to go back to RAW processor.
