Question

How to properly scale and edit floor plans in Photoshop for home design guides?

Hi everyone,

I am currently working on converting technical floor plans and architectural blueprints into clean, web-friendly graphics for home improvement guides.

What is the best workflow in Photoshop to scale dimensions accurately and apply flooring patterns without losing vector quality? Any recommendations on using Smart Objects, shape layers, or grid overlays for this type of design work would be greatly appreciated!

Agreed. This is a job for Illustrator, not Photoshop. Illustrator will give you a much better result and an easier workflow.

@Passionate_artb674 Personally, I would probably do most of this work in Illustrator or InDesign, especially if the floor plans and blueprints originate as vector artwork. That way, the linework, dimensions, and patterns remain fully scalable without losing quality. Photoshop is excellent for raster images and textures, but architectural drawings often benefit from staying in a vector format for as long as possible.

If you need to incorporate flooring patterns, textures, or other photographic elements, you could place the Illustrator artwork into Photoshop as a Smart Object. This allows you to preserve the vector source while taking advantage of Photoshop's texture, masking, and compositing tools.

For web graphics, my workflow would likely be: maintain the master artwork in Illustrator, apply any raster effects or textures in Photoshop only when needed, and then export the final web assets from the appropriate application.
