How to switch layers back on after using Frame animation function (can't see all layers anymore).

I'm currently creating 2D animation in Photoshop, and have been using the Timeline feature to check how to animation is working. Typically, I use the Frame Animation function. Once I'm happy with how everything looks, I delete the animation and go back to the layers to paint each frame.

Unfortunately, I can now only see the first layer, as if the Timeline is still stuck on the first frame. In other words, even though I can see that all the layers are present, when I show/hide them, it's like these layers are empty.

I've had this happen before. It's like the layerd .psd file gets stuck in animation mode and won't convert back to a simple, layered document.

Any thoughts? And, yes, I know that there's better animation software out there. I have an unusual workflow but it (mostly) works for me.

Well you definitely only have a single frame, but it will be easy to get it fixed.  Click on the menu bars top right of timeline, and use Make frames from layers.  This will create a frame for every layer including background etc. so delete extranious frames. The select all of the frames and turn on the background layer.  I sometimes have to rurn it off and then back on again for it to affect every frame.

If I was to give you one advice about creating frame animations, it would be to create all of the layers and elements before making the frame animation.  If you do get stuck and have to edit after the animation is made, it is usually best to select every frame.   Save often with incremental file names, and if it turns to custard, go back to the last working version.  Trying to fix them can be problematic otherwise.

That's beautiful artwork btw.

Has anyone reading this been spending time with Adobe Express?  Is it a viable for creating multi element animations?

Hi Travis,

Thanks for your reply. I do know about the Makes Frames From Layers option. The issue I was having related to trying to edit the layers after having created a frame animation. There doesn't seem to be anyway of going back, as such. I ended up just recreating my layered .psd file which, fortunately, wasn't a big deal since I'd created the different frames in Illustrator (so it was just a copy/paste layers).
