How To Turn Off Extras in Photoshop - Permanently

I saw an answer to this question here, but not in English. Whenever I open a new file (RAW, PSD or TIFF) from Lightroom it always opens with Extras turned on. If I give it a Command-H to turn it off and work on the file, it gets turned back on without pressing the Command-H toggle. Everything is turned off in the View>Show menu. I have tried the AI suggestions, including resetting Photoshop's Toolbar, but nothing works.

I was about to agree with the correct answer from DFosse until I caught that you wrote that everything is unchecked in View > Show. When you use Command+H (View > Extras), what is supposed to happen is that everything that is enabled in View > Show is toggled. The items that are not checked never appear.

The other part of his reply is to suggest a corrupt Preferences file, and that is most likely your issue. If you rename the file, then a new one will be created on relaunch. If it doesn't solve your issue, then you can retrieve the original file. Back up any customization first! Follow the steps here to back up preferences and to reset preferences. Also, read the note about viewing hidden files on macOS, as this is a hidden file.

No surprises from me that you got no help from Artificial Intelligence! When I search with Google to find a weblink to help users on the forum, I try to glance at the AI reponse at the top of every search page so I can have a brief moment of horror. Almost without fail, there is misinformation or obsolete information.

Please let us know if this solves your issue or if you need more help.

View > Extras is a temporary toggle. That behavior is by design.

The View items are disabled individually, under View > Show. If that doesn't stick, you most likely have a corrupt preferences file.

The only exception is the new "show layer bounds", which for some reason is in the options bar under a gear icon and disabled there. It really belongs in the View menu along with the others and hopefully it will get moved eventually.

Jane, Thank you so much for your thoughtful attention to my problem.

I took screenshots of each page on the Settings. There may be an issue with my tablet: I could only get 2 screenshots via Shift-Command-4 before it stopped working. After restarting my Mac, I could get 2 more. So I ended using Shift-Command-3: that worked every time. Upon unplugging my Xencelabs tablet, Command-Shift-4 on my Apple Trackpad worked every time. I mention this because I wonder if the Xencelabs device could be interfering with Photoshop. Also, the Xencelabs driver often fails to save my settings, particularly the screen mapping, so it has problems.

Anyway, I backed up my Preferences on an external drive, and manually set up a fresh Preferences. I still get Command-H turned on when I load a new file in Photoshop. But now, the annoying box I see on each layer looks the the box you see with the Crop Tool. Further, it acts exactly like the Crop Tool: I can stretch or squeeze a layer, even though the Move Tool (not the Crop Tool) is active. I use legacy Transform, so I can Shift-drag a corner of the layer to resize only that layer, with the Move Tool active.

Perhaps I should delete that Xencelabs driver altogether, upnplug the tablet, restart the Mac, and try using the Apple Trackpad. What do you think?

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
