how would i make opacity of a layer being clipped to not effect the mask?

when i set the fill opacity of a gradient to 0, the layer is masking onto this gradient becomes invisible too. is there any way to make only the gradient invisible while keeping the top layer visible?

Hi,

Select the lower layer (that the upper layer is clipped to) and in blending options uncheck 'Blend Clipped Layers as a Group'.

hi, tried this already and it doesn't seem to work. instead of being able to make the gradient invisible, it just stops clipping to the gradient entirely.

Sorry, I'd misunderstood you. The option I described disconnects the clipping to the fill but the upper layer is still clipped to the lower layer's mask. 
You appear to want the upper layer clipped to the fill content of the lower layer but without being affected when the fill content is made transparent, which you cannot do directly.
