I have two computers. One opens NEF files in Photoshop, but recently the other does not. Message: "Could not open...because of an end-of-file was encountered". What do I do?

As Axel says, “end-of-file” normally means a corrupt file. Try to copy a file off that machine and see if it opens on a different machine. If it doesn’t, something has corrupted your files, and that always boils down to failing hardware. That’s usually a bad drive, but another common cause is saving directly to external storage or over a network connection. Or any failing component.

If it does open, that’s good news. Then you have a corrupt Photoshop install, or corrupt preferences, and both of those are easily fixed in one go. Uninstall and choose do not keep settings. To be sure, look in your user account for an “Adobe Photoshop 2026 Settings” folder. If it’s still there, delete it. You want a clean slate. Then reinstall.

If you have custom actions and brushes, save them out first.
