I need the small file icon to appear on the corner of PSD thumbnails.

Recently my windows machine updated, and now none of my PSD files have their corresponding file icon on the thumbnail. It will show the thumbnail just fine, but the file icon is missing. Other programs display their file icon just fine.

An example of a PSD file present in the explorer, but missing its file icon in the thumbnail.
An example of a different file type (.clip) that displays a thumbnail and file icon.

I’ve told Windows to always open PSDs with Photoshop. I’ve also turned the option to display file icons off and on again.

Would like any insight others have into fixing this. It’s not ideal to not know at a glance which files are PSDs, and I would prefer not to display file types in the name of files.

If you mean the PSD file-type icon on thumbnail previews, try rebuilding the thumbnail/icon cache and checking your file association settings. Make sure Photoshop is still set as the default app for PSD files.

The issue persists despite rebuilding the icon cache and confirming that Photoshop is the default program for PSDs.

You might also check file associations.  I can’t think what else might be linked to PSD files, but just in case.  Come to think of it, two of my Topaz apps are showing grey rectangles since recent updates, so I should try and fix those while I think about it. The other one is Gigapixel.

I’ve told Windows to associate Photoshop as the default app to open PSDs with, but the issue persists.

Hi. From my experience, this is most often a problem with a corrupted icon cache. It’s suggested that rebuilding the icon cache will resolve this type of problem.
You may find the instructions here, helpful: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/4166178/how-to-rebuild-icon-cache-in-windows-11-tried-the

I’ve used a couple of the techniques within that link to delete and reset my icon cache along with a computer restart, but my PSDs still lack their file icons. They’re still the only file type lacking its icon (aside from basic image files).

Sorry those didn’t work. I DID find someone who’d had a similar problem in our Bug Report section, an dit looks like he managed to fix it. Perhaps this will help:
