I’ve lost the "Apply" checkmark in the Photoshop options bar

There is another possible solution that you should keep in mind as Photoshop becomes more complex. Adobe added another way to apply pending changes, another form of the checkmark. It is a button in the relatively new Contextual Task Bar that you should look for. The name depends on what you’re doing. For example, if a transformation is pending the button says Done, if a selection is active the button says Deselect, and if a Remove tool stroke exists it says Remove.

In the demo below where a Remove tool stroke is pending, in the Contextual Task Bar you can see that the tool tip for Remove button is exactly the same as the tool tip for the checkmark: Apply to Current Strokes. That means, if you can’t see the checkmark because the options bar is not wide enough, you can still apply the change by clicking that Remove button.

So while in the past you had at least two ways to confirm a pending action, now you have at least three (the last one is the newest):

• Click the check mark in the options bar
• Press the Enter or Return key
• Click the (apply) button in the Contextual Task Bar

So if you can’t see the check mark, you don’t really need it…because there may be at least two other ways to commit the pending action.

Also note that the “semicolon” button you noticed is a symptom of the options bar getting cut off at the right side, because it isn’t a semicolon; it’s a partially visible Provide Feedback button.

I did that and even restarted Photoshop, but the checkmark did not appear. I wish Adobe would leave things alone for a while. I need to work, not figure out what happened to the controls I use.
