Impossible shortcuts used in PS with german keyboard

Photoshop 2024, german Windows, german keyboard

Issue: see topic. This is considered as a bug.

What happens: the functionality "Show guides" from the View menu is assigned the shortcut "Ctrl+;" on the english UI of PS.

Problem: there is no way to press "Ctrl+;" on a german keyboard. It would always be "Shift+Ctrl+;"

Side problem: in earlier versions of PS, for instance CS6, that shortcut once was "Ctrl+," which uses the same key as the semicolon. That always worked.

Solution: we have to create our own shortcuts.

Impact: a bit annoying, because illogical.

I don't know if they have changed. Ctrl+, is used for Hide (selected) Layers, which sounds very much like an old command that's been around for ages, and can also be quite useful. There's no obvious reason why that has needed to change.

(oh, and, to be fair, there are square brackets on a Norwegian keyboard, but I'm not pressing Alt Gr to get there []. So - same problem as you.)

Sure, you are right. What's rather the point, that they changed the original shortcut here. Always a surprise, fun with new versions.

This is just the nature of the game. I've had to change a whole bunch of shortcuts because the keys/key combos aren't available on my Norwegian keyboards.

Example: the square brackets for increase / decrease brush size. There are no square brackets on a Norwegian keyboard. So I use , and .

Just change the shortcut.

The problem is, that there seems to be a ton of undocumented shortcuts that you also can't find in the keyboard shortcut settings. One example would be the shortcuts to change blend modes when using the brush tool ( "Alt + Shift + N" = normal mode, "Alt + Shift + M = Multiply Mode", etc.). Just today I found the info that there exists a shortcut for selecting the next (or previous) layer in the layer palette. It seems to be "Alt + [" and "Alt + ]". I can't use the square brackets on my German keyboard (they are "Alt GR + 8" and "Alt GR + 9") but I also can't change that shortcut because it doesn't appear in the keyboard shortcuts settings.

I want to strongly advocate for bringing ALL keyboard shortcuts into the keyboard shortcuts menue so that they can be changed.
