In Photoshop 2026 the Lasso Tool selects an area to the right of where I'm selecting.

When I use the Lasso Tool in Photoshop version 27.3.1 the selection appears to the right of where my Lasso Tool is pointed. In the included picture I started to at the top left of the dog leash and dragged down on the left, then over to the other side of the leash where it attaches to the dog collar, then up along the right side and finally across the top to the left side of the leash. You can see the selection show where I started, but completes on the far right of the leash.

My Performance option “Use Graphics Processor” is checked. Note: I’ve unchecked this option and the problem is still the same.

    Problem Solved.

I don’t know if it had anything to do with the problem, but I do use 2 monitors. I open Photoshop on my secondary monitor (left hand monitor), and it places the Lasso tool selection to the right of the dog leash as seen in the original photo I supplied. If I open Photoshop on my primary monitor (right hand monitor) it places the selection to the left of the leash, but only an abbreviated selection smaller that on the secondary monitor.

After praying about it I finally found the following instructions that solved my problem with the Lasso tool. See steps below:

    Solution:

    1.    Quit Photoshop.
    2.    In Windows File Explorer, navigate to the Photoshop installation folder.
    3.    Right-click Photoshop.exe in the installation directory and select Properties.
    4.    Switch to the Compatibility tab in the dialog that appears.
    5.    Click on the button that says: “Change high DPI settings”.
    6.    Deselect Override High DPI Scaling Behavior in the Settings group.
    7.    Click Apply and then click OK.
    8.    Relaunch Photoshop.

My thanks to @ Sameer K for his suggestions in trying to help me solve the problem. He was quite thorough.

    @ Sameer K

I did as you instructed and it did reset my Photoshop back to a new install. I had to reset the Workspace back to Photography. I reloaded my dog picture and tried to outline the leash with the Lasso Tool, but again it’s putting the outline to the right of the leash as in the originally submitted picture.

When I originally had the Lasso Tool problem, I installed an earlier version of Photoshop (27.0), but the problem was the same. I didn’t try any earlier version.

I did notice that my Logitech MX Master 3 mouse is doing something odd. When I click on the Window menu tab at the top of the Photoshop interface the menu drops down as one would suspect. It drops down to the right of the Window menu tab, but when I move my mouse pointer to the right to click on a menu item the drop-down menu list disappears. I can press the down arrow key, and it will highlight the menu items as I scroll down, but with a menu item highlighted if I move the mouse pointer to place it in the menu list the menu list disappears again. I downloaded the Logitech firmware update for my mouse and after the update it still does the same thing. I did try the menu selection in Lightroom and it did okay there. I also tried a corded mouse with the same list issue and the same problem with the Lasso Tool. I did notice that in Device Manager that the pointing device is showing a Microsoft driver installed and says it’s the latest. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the problem I’m having with the Lasso Tool, but I thought I’d mention it.

    @ Sameer K

There were two graphics Adapters in the Control Panel/Display Adapters section. See image below. The AMD Radeon is part of the motherboard. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 ti is the only graphics card in the graphics card slot on the mother board. I set the 5060 ti as the default graphics adapter, as you suggested and I disable the AMD Radeon driver to make sure it was not interfering with the image. I installed the Studio Drivers per your instructions and set the 5060 ti to the Studio Drivers. After updating the drivers the 5060 ti driver went from a date of 2025-07-14 to a date of 2025-12-30.

After doing the above I restarted the computer and checked to see that nothing had change, and then I opened Photoshop and tried editing the same dog picture. However, the problem is still the same. As I outlined the leash with the Lasso Tool as before, the selection (“marching ants”) showed up to the right of the leash as shown in the picture I submitted previously. I also tried to outline something in a different picture with the same results, that is the selection showed to the right of the selected area. The selection always shows the selection starting where I started the selection, but as soon as I start pulling the selection it goes to the right of the intended area.

I’m very grateful for all the help you have given me, but I have no idea where to go from here. Thank you very much, Dean

Thanks for the detailed update. At this stage, ensure there are no stale preferences in Photoshop.

Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

    • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
    • You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
    • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2026 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2026. old), You can restore these preferences later if needed.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)
    • Restart the computer.

These changes will give Photoshop a fresh start as a new install. Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!

    @Sameer K

I use a mouse and keyboard.

I reset the Lasso tool as you instructed. This did not solve the problem.

I also did this: “Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > upload and attach here.” See attached.

Thanks for sharing the update. The drivers on one of the Graphics processors are 7 months old. Try these two sets of steps:

1 - Use Nvidia's auto-detect application to install the latest Studio Drivers. Update the graphics drivers using Nvidia's auto-detect program.  (Nvidia: https://adobe.ly/44JxZDd

2 - After you update the GPU drivers, set the Nvidia GPU as the default:

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hey, @Dean1128. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll move this post to discussions. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > upload and attach here. Are you using a stylus or just a regular mouse and keyboard?

In this case, you can start by resetting the Lasso Tool. Right-click the Tool icon in the Toolbar menu, then select Reset Tool.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks!
