Issues with Camera Raw recognizing people in the photo.

I’ve been using the “Select People” feature in Camera Raw since it was introduced, and it’s always worked well for me until recently. Now it has completely stopped working.

Every time I try to use it, it processes for a moment and then returns the error: “Unable to select people in this photo.” This happens on every image I try, even simple headshots with a single person clearly facing the camera.

I’ve already tried updating Photoshop and Camera Raw, uninstalling and reinstalling both, and updating my operating system. None of that has fixed the issue. I’ve also confirmed that all other masking tools (object, background, sky, etc.) are working as expected. It’s only “Select People” that fails.

For reference, I’m running Adobe Photoshop v27.5.0 on a 2020 iMac (3.6 GHz 10-core Intel Core i9).

This is a feature I rely on regularly, so it’s been incredibly frustrating to lose it without any clear reason.

Has anyone else run into this issue or found a fix?

Thank you for your help, Trevor. I’ve tried all of these steps, but unfortunately the issue is still happening. I’ll keep digging into it. Hopefully there’s a solution out there.

OK, I’ve got it to work.

Inside Photoshop go Edit > Preferences > Camera RAW click and immediately hold down the Alt key (Ctrl on a Mac).  That brought up the reset dialog for me.

Good luck and let us know if that worked.

[EDIT] The forum rearranges the way replies are listed, so note my first reply to purge cache etc.

Trevor, I’m not sure if this is a typo or not.

Usually Option is the equivalent of Alt and the Ctrl key is the equivalent of using the right mouse button.

Opps, you are right Jane. It is the Opt key.  I still had a job getting it to work with Windows, and I was trying a bunch of different ways.

[Interesting fact] I found a video describing how to reset Caera RAW preferences on Benjamin Root’s YouTube channel.  This is the first time I have heard his voice!  I swapped emails with a few months back asking how he was, and he is fine, but busy.

Edit > Preferences > Camera RAW

Reset GPU Support and Purge Cache

We should be able to reset Camera RAW Preferences by holding down Ctrl Alt Shift immediately after opening a RAW file, but I can’t get that to work.  I’ll see if I can find a manual method.
