Issues with Refine Edge Brush

Hi guys, new to learning and working with Adobe Photoshop, have been learning the select an object with the select and mask.. however when following instructions to make the hair and edges better using the refine edge brush, mine looks and works completely different to all the videos I watch. Mine seems to act like an eraser instead and lightens it up and even starts taking away parts. Maybe I am doing something wrong or a setting is out but I can't seem to find a solution to the problem I am having.

I have uploaded pictures to hopefully show what I am explaining.. even when I use the brush it seems to be different to other peoples, when they drag it you don't see anything and then the refined edges appear whereas when I drag mine you see a big circle of the background.

Hi @bleu267198473on7, let's see if we can help you. Is it possible for you to take a screengrab of your entire workspace in Photoshop, including the layers panel? The images you provided seem to be taken of your screen with a phone camera, so it's difficult to see what's going on. If you don't know how to, instructions on taking screen captures on a macOS are here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361. There are also third-party screen capture apps you can install.

I'm not sure of the source of the files or lesson you were practicing with, but here is a tutorial on fine-tuning layer masks that might be helpful to watch, too. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/how-to/fine-tune-layer-masks.html.

Hi Jel, Thank you for your reply, i have watched the link you sent in regards to the refined brush, its shows the same method as what i have been watching online previously, which now backs up mine isnt correct. I have taken 2 screengrabs on my mac so you can see my work space and what i am experiening. So in one screenshot you will see what the brush looks like when i use it, its as if it erases the area and you can see the background clearly, whereas on the video form the link you have sent if you watch that when they use the refined brush it doesnt show anything when using it, it's as if it is invisble and then after it shows the hair. The second picture shows after using it on the hair, instead of refine and bring more fine strands of hair into the picture it starts erasing the bulk of hair and just disapears.

Hope this makes as much sense as it can over text.

I look forward to your reply and hopefully resolving this situation.

Okay, thanks for that extra information and the screenshots. Are you sure you are brushing on the layer mask (is it selected) and not on the image itself? This could also have to do with your brush settings. Yours looks to be a soft brush at 60 percent. Try resetting the brush tool as shown in the tutorial. Let us know if that makes any difference.
