Question

Keeping same file type when I'm saving photos.

I upgraded to PS 26.  I save my photos as JPEG.  I have to repick JPEG every time because the program is defaulting to Photoshop as the file type.  How do I change to JPEG as the default?  Thanks.

Photoshop has a new Preference setting, that opens a JPEG with the background layer as normal layer. That is outside the JPEG specifications, so Photoshop will default to PSD for saving it, even if you did not make any edits that are outside the JPEG specifications. Disable that preference and Photoshop should default to keeping JPG again. It’s in Preferences - Technology Previews.

To be clear, jpeg can never be a general default. The jpeg file format specification does not support 16 bit depth, layers, transparency or alpha channels. In short, almost anything you can do to a file in Photoshop will put it outside the jpeg specification. The only file formats that support all Photoshop tools and functions are PSD/PSB and TIFF.

However - if your jpeg is resaved without any changes that are inadmissible in the jpeg specification, then it will resave as a jpeg. It has to be a flattened 8 bit file without alpha channels.

It’s possible to check “legacy save as” in preferences, which will branch out a jpeg copy of the original, with all the forbidden properties removed. That will still leave the full original unsaved.

We need a little more info, please:

    • Are you doing anything that is not supported by the JPEG format, such as using layers, transparency, 16-bit, et cetera? If so, it defaults to .psd.
    • Are you re-saving a jpeg or is it a new image?
    • Are you using Save, Save As, or Save A Copy?
    • Are you using an Action or the File menu?
