Large feathered selections suddenly no longer produce correct soft transitions in Curves and Levels. Very large feather values behave like much smaller ones.

A serious problem appeared suddenly yesterday in Photoshop.

My long-used workflow with large feathered selections no longer behaves correctly during direct adjustments such as Curves, Levels and Saturation.

Reproducible issue:

  • Large image
  • Large selection area
  • Feather values between 250 px and 700 px
  • Direct adjustment via Curves / Levels

Expected result:
A very broad and soft tonal transition.

Actual result:
The transition remains extremely narrow, visually similar to a much smaller feather radius.

Important observations:

  • The same workflow functioned correctly until yesterday
  • Feather is actually stored in the selection (verified with Ctrl+J transparency test)
  • The problem specifically affects practical adjustment behavior during Curves / Levels operations
  • Reproduced after complete clean reinstall
  • Adobe Cleaner Tool used
  • Preferences reset
  • GPU disabled and tested
  • Multiple Photoshop versions tested
  • Same behavior on a new Windows user profile

This seriously affects fast local correction workflows based on large feathered selections.

Attached screenshots show the problem visually.

Any sugestions?

@Tudor35430136bter  Your screenshot appears to show the feather working correctly.

A feather of 250 px, shown as selected in your first screenshot, would be approximately 3.6% of the height of your 7025 px high document. That appears to be the feather size you are getting in your third screenshot.

Adding to what Dave and others have said, popping into Quickmask is a useful way to visualize how soft a selection’s edges are.  Toggle on and off with Q to compare.  I prefer to work with Color indicates selected areas.

Double click the Quickmask icon to access the panel.

As already pointed out a 250px feather on an image that big does not seem »very broad and soft« exactly.

You seem to be applying the Curves Adjustment destructively – have you tried using an Adjustment Layer instead and then editing the Layer Mask either via the Properties Panel or Filter-application?

Hey, @Tudor35430136bter. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. Sorry for the delay in getting to your post.

I’ve just tried this and couldn’t get the described result. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

Could you please share a video of the issue and the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

    Thanks!
