lasso tool initial shape disappearing after i make a second one

as i start carving the second one, the first one disappears.

This is expected behavior and the way Photoshop has always worked.

To draw multiple shapes do one of these:

• Press the Shift key > Start to draw a selection with the Lasso tool > Release the Shift key, but not the mouse
  Continue drawing and don't overlap the first selection
  Release the mouse only when finished
  OR

• In the options bar for the Lasso tool, specify a selection option:
  New Selection, Add to Selection, Subtract from Selection, or Intersect with Selection.

If you are new to this, practice a few times with selections that are not precise or important until it becomes second nature. It won't take long.
