Layer mask not working in Photoshop 26.5

I am working in Photoshop 26.5 (MacBook Pro, macOS Sonoma). I have made a selection and want to create a layer mask with the selection in it. When I click on the "add layer mask" icon in Layers nothing happens. Any assistance or information would be appreciated.

@dond48384392 it's working as expected for me with Photoshop version 26.5, have you tried manually resetting your Photoshop preferences

Remember to back up your settings before doing the preference reset

If you continue to experience difficulties after trying the suggestions above, consider capturing a short video or posting a screenshot with the Layers panel expanded and visible.

Thank you. The preferences seemed to have been the culprit.

Thanks. I will give that a try and see if it is a fix.
