Layers panel shows paintbrush

I am not getting images in the layers panel just a box with a paintbrush in it. What happened to the proper image?

Go to the top right of the layers panel and click on the square (four horizontal lines) to open the menu.

Then choose panel options.

Set the thumbnail size to anything except "none"

You can do the same in Illustrator!!!
