How do I enable Clipping Warning for the New Light Adjustment Layer?

Hi pjglad,

Thanks for reaching out! The new Light adjustment layer in Photoshop gives you six powerful controls, Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, and Blacks but it does not currently have a clipping warning indicator like you might be familiar with in Camera Raw or Lightroom.

Here are two ways you can check for highlight and shadow clipping while working with the Light adjustment layer:

Use the Levels adjustment to check clipping:
- Add a temporary Levels adjustment layer above your Light layer.
- Hold Alt (Windows) / Option (Mac) while dragging the black-point (left) or white-point (right) Input Levels slider.
- The preview will show exactly where pixels are being clipped to pure black or pure white.
- Use this as a visual reference, then delete or hide the Levels layer when you're done.
Use the Camera Raw Filter.
- Convert your layer to a Smart Object (right-click the layer > Convert to Smart Object).
- Go to Filter > Camera Raw Filter.
- In Camera Raw, click the triangle indicators at the top corners of the histogram to toggle shadow clipping (upper-left) and highlight clipping (upper-right) overlays.
- You can also hold Alt/Option while dragging any tone slider to preview clipping in real time.

Thanks for responding. Perhaps there is a use case for the new light adjustment layer. As a photographer this new light adjustment layer does not work for me without clipping warnings.

One could use a Blend if-Layer as a temporary indicator – obviously only a suboptimal work-around.

A quick scan through this website on the topic, Dynamic Clipping Warnings in Photoshop: Precision Exposure Monitoring: “Photoshop’s built-in clipping warnings are enabled through two independent pathways: the Info panel overlay and the Channels panel toggle.”

The webpage says it works in Ps 2024-2025. I tried following the instructions to “activate the Info panel overlay: Open Window > Info, then check ‘Show Channels in Info’.” No such checkbox in Ps 27.10.0.

I also failed the technique described in the paragraph, Configuring Full-Canvas Visual Overlays.

Perhaps the wise old ones in this community will have better suggestions.

P.S. I search Ps>Settings, didn’t find/overlooked a way.

When I tried to go to that link, it redirects to some online store, even if only the top level domain name is entered. And neither the Info panel nor Channels panel methods that were quoted seem familiar or plausible, it’s all very strange.

At this time I think adding a top-level Levels or Curves layer just to see its clipping display is the only built-in way to see clipping in Photoshop itself. In other words, Photoshop has no image-level clipping display like you have in Camera Raw or Lightroom; in Photoshop clipping preview is feature-specific.

This looks like another case where Photoshop hasn’t quite caught up to the other Adobe photo editors. (The new Light panel itself is another catch-up feature; its options appeared many years before in Camera Raw and Lightroom.)
