Question

Lines Look Crisp in Photoshop but Turn Wavy in Illustrator (PNG/SVG)

Hi all!

I've been doing a lot of work with silhouettes and outlines which require background removal. I've been achieving this using magic wand selection and touching up where needed. I'll typically blow up the design, use some Gaussian Blur + Levels to make the lines clearer. They don't always look perfectly crisp but definitely good enough while the file is in Photoshop. However, whenever it's converted to PNG or SVG and imputted into Illustrator, the lines are no longer straight, but wavy & squiggly.

Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to avoid this? Thank you in advance!

Could you please post screenshots of the png taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible and the corresponding resulting file from Illustrator?

Just how wavy are the results in Illustrator? Can you provide some details of the file sizes you're using and provide some screen shots?

In general, adding a shape  or silhouette into Illustrator, I've found that you're better off with either image trace or with drawing over the image with vector tools.

Because I collaborate with people who have and use Illustrator software, I'm not really able to provide much information on that side, but I can show what I mean by the wavy-ness:

This is the info for the PNG I created via Photoshop:

The design image itself was scaled to those measurements in inches in the PSD file.

Just to be clear, the image trace/vector tools you mentioned are in Illustrator, correct?

Thank you for your help!
