Question

Luminosity Masks

PS has just updated to 27.11.0 and I’m no longer able to use the luminosity masks action that I had been using successfully up to now. It makes an attempt to create the masks but after several error messages, it will only create a selection of the total that it normally would.

I work in Lab colour mode but it’s also affected in RGB also.

I just need a simple action that can do as I need, I don’t want a separate plug-in. A bit baffled as to why this is happening.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • To fix it quickly, re record a simple action:
    • Open the Actions panel and click Create New Action.

    • Click Record.

    • Open the Channels panel ( Window > Channel ).

    • Ctrl click (Windows) or Cmd click (Mac) the RGB (or Lightness in Lab mode) channel thumbnail to load the luminosity selection.

    • Click Stop.

Please post complete screenshots including all pertinent Panels (Layers, Channels, …) and the fully expanded Action in the Actions Panel (and of the error messages).

It is possible to roll-back to the previous version of Photoshop. I would also suggest turning off ‘Auto Updates’ as well, so you don’t have the Luminosity Masks issue with the new Photoshop

Rolling back to a previous version is a bad suggestion in my opinion. It may solve the problem for now, but then what? Are you going to stay in this dead end road forever? Never ever update Photoshop again? This is only a (temporary) solution if the problem is caused by a known bug, so you can expect a fix. If not (and this is not a known bug AFAIK), then you need to find a solution that works with the current version. As you can always recreate actions, that should be pretty easy in this case.

@JohanElzenga for the time being? ‘Yes’ — until Adobe can fix the bug!

If you would tell us what those error messages say, then perhaps we could help you solve the problem. You can also simply record the action again. That might be a faster solution in the end…
