Question

Make autosave on close for cloud files be an OPTIONAL feature.

You know when you close a file and this pops up?

Apparently around version 2026 this doesn’t happen anymore for Cloud Files specifically, it just always autosaves, no way to have it be how it was, if you use cloud files you are locked into saving your file whenever you close the window, even if its a misclick.

  • Of course there is using just local files… wich you can’t really see thumbnail preview on file explorer nor does photoshop include a “Local Files” section in its home menu file browser, so you’d be giving up thumbnails unless you want to install outside apps to solve the issue. And well, the obvious… and storing your files in the cloud you also give up that too.
  • And any other possible solution is just extra steps to what worked well enough before.

So my proposal here is to give back just this system of saving back as an option for Cloud Files also, for people who want some control of what gets saved when, even for Cloud Files.

May I add that there is a way to see previous versions of a file that has been saved to Cloud files automatically? It’s called Version History. Here’s the relevant paragraph from the Help page:

Desktop

You can quickly check your version history in Photoshop desktop by following the simple steps below:

  1. Open a cloud document and choose either File > Version History or Window > Version History to open the Version History panel.
  2. In the Version History panel that opens, you can easily browse and view thumbnails of saved versions of your cloud document.
    • Click the three dots () icon and select Name this version to give a name to the selected version and add it to the Marked versions list. You can also Rename this version at another time.
    • Click the Mark version () icon to save that version of your cloud document, and easily access your saved cloud document versions under the Marked Versions section at the top of the Version History panel.
    • Click the Mark version icon again to remove a saved cloud document version from the Marked Versions section and undo any version naming.
    • To convert a previous cloud document version into a new document, click the three dots () icon and select Open in a new tab.

@Tramon81

I think this is true for all applications that save to a cloud. I know it’s true with Microsoft’s One Drive.

If you want to be able to close without saving, then save to your HD instead of the Cloud.

If you are on Windows and can’t see the thumbnails, you need to install a codec. If you are on macOS, it’s built into the OS and don’t need a codec to see the previews.

Alternatively, do you file management with Adobe Bridge where you can see previews on both Windows and macOS.

Lastly, if you don’t like any of my suggestions because you want to see Adobe make a change, then please note that Adobe Staff will see your feature request. I’m just trying to help you find a way to see the previews.

Yeah dw I get that, i’ve also been researching alternatives before posting here and you did a pretty good summary of everything available, but still, I’m not too keen on the codec options I see around (either not like safe looking enough or ones that while reputable, seem like they could still cause problems with my computer from other user accounts). I heard there’s a sort of standtill between photshop and microsoft to have File Explore thumnails for psd files be a thing...? What’s the current info on that? Cause thats also a feature I’m quite interested in too.

But yeah, I do want this to be changed… It’s only logical, even if most other programs do autosave religiously, the option still existed in photoshop for both autosave and non-autosave ways to save documents on the cloud, and easily navigate them in the home page without need for anything more.

But again thanks for your feedback Jane, hopefully at least this post can contribute enough for it to become a talking point.
