Matting option is grey out in photoshop, any idea why!

It does not work with layer mask which is selected in the screenshot. Select layer thumbnail instead of mask and option will be available. Oooops, you have Smart Object layer, it won't work with Smart Object layer either. This option work with pixel based layers (beside Background layer) and layer thumbnail must be selected.
