Guys I'm getting more confused, D Fosse are you saying Photoshop can only be installed on a C drive, no matter what machine I have

I’m saying Photoshop needs to be installed, it cannot be moved.

I’m also saying that wherever you choose to install it, C, D, wherever, the Settings folder will always go to C, to your Windows user account - even if the Program files are on a different drive.

In other words, if you install Photoshop on D, your settings, actions, presets etc will still be on C.

All your personalised settings are stored in your Windows user account, which is always on the C (system) drive, no matter where the application program files are. Program Files and Settings are strictly separate and stored in different directories. Settings cannot be moved.

    C (system) > Users > You > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop 2026

If you’re doing this to save space, there really is no point and this is not the way to go about it. At best, you save a couple of GBs, which is nothing in the big picture.

You can save ten times that space, at least, by cleaning out your system drive of all the stuff that accumulates over time. Start by running disk cleanup in Windows, and dial upp the settings a bit from the default settings, to get rid of as much as possible.

Next, there are utilities that will show you in a graphical interface exactly what fills up your drive and where it is. I’m still using WinDirStat, but I’m told there are faster alternatives. Come to think of it, you might want to do this first, it should give you a bit of perspective.

As a general rule of thumb, a standard installation of OS and a normal range of applications, should not take up much more than 100-130 GB. Much more than that, and it’s time for cleanup.

Hi D Fosse thanks for you reply, the reason I'm looking to move PS to another drive (D) is i have all my other photography related items on  D drive on my old laptop  which I'm going to be installing  in my new laptop which has 4 SSD slots.

    Hi newry,

Don't move the Photoshop program folder manually in Explorer — do it through Creative Cloud:

    1. Safeguard your customisation first: your actions, presets and settings are stored outside the program folder, in the Adobe Photoshop Settings folder under C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe on Windows. Back that folder up, and/or export presets via Edit > Presets > Export/Import Presets.

    2. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app, select the Account icon > Preferences > Apps, click the change icon next to Install location, choose a folder on the other drive and select Done. Note this setting applies to future installs.

    3. Uninstall Photoshop from the Creative Cloud app, then reinstall it — it will now install to the new location.

    4. If anything doesn't come across, use Edit > Presets > Migrate Presets, or import the presets you exported.
