Need Help with Path strokes and shapes

I'm trying to achieve a paper/hand-drawn effect on shapes.

I figured out I could stroke a path with the brush and get this look. When I was playing around with it, I could also fill the path with the brush.

But, the next time I tried it, I could stroke with the brush, but when I right-clicked and choose fill, it no longer brought up the brush option. The only options I get are foreground, background, or color.

My next question is, I would like to be able to make shapes by combining or excluding shapes together. I can no longer use the stroke with brush idea when I do this.

My questions are:

1. How do I both stroke AND fill a path with a brush?

2. After using the shape tool to create custom combined tools, how do I turn those back into a path to be able to do #1?

Please let me know if there is an easier way to achieve the look in the image.

Thank you!

1. You can not fill using Brush, only available automated option to use Brush with path Stroke path with the brush. As already mentionsed, you can create selection from path then paint inside using the Brush tool.

2. One way to create path from shape layer is to select shape layer in the Layers panel then drag its path on the new path icon at the bottom of Paths panel to duplicate it as a new path which can be stroked with the brush.

Thank you for the answer. I follower these steps:

1. Created a shape with the shape tool (set to "shape" in the tool bar).

2. I dragged the path as you show in your image to the new path. This created a path called Ellipse 1 Shape Path Copy.

3. However, when I select this path and right click the option to stroke or fill are greyed out.

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

I guess "wrong" is layer selected in the Layers panel. Ensure that pixel based layer is selected in the Layers panel before atempting to use Stroke path. No shape, no Smart Object, no mask, no Type layer but plain pixel based layer or empty layer, create blank new layer, select it then select path in the Paths panel and try to stroke it.

I'm not clear on "Filling a path with  a brush". Are you talking about painting in a Vector Mask? Or di you possibly make the path inbto a selection?
