Needing to force quit to open Photoshop

Photoshop will not open more than once - I will be working on an image, close the image, then try and open a new image and photoshop will refuse to open. I’ll have to force close on mac and then it will open the new file. It does not matter if I’m trying to open the new file from Bridge or Finder, it won’t work either way.

Version: 27.6.0

OS: macOS Tahoe 26.4

    Hi @melrepetti

Thanks for flagging this. Having to force quit just to open another file is understandably frustrating. To help the team investigate further, could you also share the following details?

    • When Photoshop “refuses to open,” what exactly do you see?

      • Is the File menu greyed out?

      • Can you interact with the menu bar at all?

      • Does Photoshop show the Home screen but ignore clicks?

      • Does the Dock icon show a spinning indicator?

    • Does this happen immediately after closing a file, or only after the file finishes saving? For example, do you see a save progress indicator before the app hangs?

    • Are you saving files locally or as Creative Cloud cloud documents?

    • Did the issue begin after updating to macOS Tahoe 26.4, after updating Photoshop to 27.6, or around the same time as both?

    • Have you already tried resetting Photoshop preferences? If not, please back up your preferences first and then reset them using the steps shared here: https://adobe.ly/3Phh1Iy

    • Do you have any third-party plug-ins or font managers installed? Sometimes these can keep Photoshop processes active in the background.

    • When the issue occurs, does Activity Monitor show Photoshop as “Not Responding”? Also, do you notice any unusually high CPU usage from Photoshop or related processes?

We’re here to help. These extra details really help us understand what’s happening on launch.
