Question

No content aware fill without internet

Since the latest update I no longer seem to be able to select content aware fill when cropping and image if there is no internet connection. I can appreciate that Generative Fill can't work without an internet connection but the loss of the Content Aware fill when not connected to the internet is a problem for me as often do some basic editing on the move when there is no reliable internet connection. Is this a 'bug' or a 'new feature'?

Content Aware Fill works normally without internet (PS 25.4 / Win).

The OP must be confusing it with Generative Fill.

I have a Desktop and Laptop both running v25.4 on Win 11 23H2. Content Aware Fill is only available when connected to the ibternet on both machines. FYI I am totally conversant of the difference between Content Aware Fill and Generaltive Fill and am not confusing the two.

Try Disabling your internet connection, then launch photoshop - when I do this both Generative Fill and Content Aware Fill are greyed out and not selectable.

Here on both Windows 10 and macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 with Photoshop 2024 (ps ver 25.4)

Edit>Fill>Content Aware, Edit>Content Aware Fill and Content Aware Fill with the Crop Tool seem to still work offline.

Are you using the latest Photoshop beta or the release version of Photoshop?

Interesting - will the use of Content Aware Fill count against your generative credits when Adob get around to implimenting them ?

@brianp49895668 no Content Aware Fill does not count against credits - however using the Crop Tool as you pointed out, with the Gen Expand does.

Were talking here about content aware fill - not generative fill. Content Aware Fill has worked completly locally until now. However the option to chose content aware fill when cropping now seems to require an internet connection in the latest release.

Does Content-Aware Fill still work locally from the Edit > Fill-dialog, though?

Interesting observation; I, too, assumed that Content-Aware Fill worked locally.

I'm not in front of a computer, but there should be a toolbar option and or preference setting to either process on device (faster) or cloud (more accurate). I'm remembering it as applicable for select subject but it may also be for other features?

EDIT: The only mention that I can find of cloud processing is for select subject, not for content aware fill.
