Question

No editing possible after importing directly from lightroom classic into photoshop

Hi,

I have RAW photos I'm editing in LrC V14.5, directly going from the 'photo' tab 'Edit In' option, to Photoshop V26.9.

Once in Ps I lose all power to edit the layers. It merely flashes briefly then reverts to no change.

Layers are unlocked and nothing I see has been changed from default or usual settings to complicate.. No error message pops up, no prompt of any kind, just a single click that shows the briefest preview then nothing.

PC is running RTX3080 with 32 gig RAM, and certainly showing no useage issues. Files are on a Samsung SSD. Read & write speeds excellent.

No issues if opening in Camera RAW into Ps, ONLY from LrC.

Huge help if any help available.

Many thanks

Hi @jeremyrackham

I work between Lightroom Classic and Photoshop continuously with no issues, so it sounds like an issue on your particular installation. Can you confirm a couple of things :

1. When you say your files are on an SSD, is that an internal SSD or is it external and plugged into your PC? The recomendation for Photoshop is to work on an internal disk.
2. You mention layers, on opening a raw file from Lightroom to Photoshop using 'Edit in' it normally opens as a background layer only (unless you have used Open As Smart object in Photoshop). Did you add those layers you refer to afterwards in Photoshop?

There are two things I would try.
1. Reset Photoshop Preferences. The preference files contain more than just the user settings and are saved every time Photoshop closes. Any corruption can lead to strange behaviours. Back them up first, then you can easily restore them if the reset does not help.

2. Update to Photoshop 26.10 which was released this week. Note updating does not rewrite all preferences so step 1 is still valid.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for reply, and in truth I'm 98% video, and workflow all good with
that. So I can accept some fundamentals still escaping me.

1. I keep around 500 gig free on internal SSD for current projects, so that
should be ok.

2. I do some RAW edits in LrC first, mainly because the DeNoise and
sharpening is recommended as part of the pre-Photoshop process.
I then simply go up to the 'Photo' tab and click 'Edit in' where I have
tried both the latest Ps and Ps Beta versions.
Ps then launches with my RAW photo all ready and visible to apply edits.
I then simply click the new layer icon, making sure it's the top layer,
and presto...no edits work.(comes with the warning circle and a message
about a non-editable layer).
I have tried CRTL-J on the imported layer, which then doesn't give the
warning, but simply flashes the edit, only to instantly disappear, and
nothing changes. The layer, either method, is definitely not locked,
neither is it a smart object.

However, when going from Camera RAW to Photoshop by a similar method,
everything is working as it should.

I have reset preferences and I am using 26.10, but still no joy.

I can kinda see that somehow the 'Edit in' process going to Ps is not doing
something to the information, or it IS doing something, but I can't see
what I can address to sort it.

I am trying to find a screenshot of someone's working preferences to
compare them field by field, but at the moment it's incredibly convoluted,
and I just need to get on and get the results to the client.

Cheers

Can you attach a full screen screenshot, including the layers panel, at the stage where you have added a new layer and are getting the error message. It may shed some light on what is happening.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

Thanks,

I'm likely ditching Adobe soon, there seems to be so many low cost pay once
alternatives that reach the same results without such
convoluted complications.

Appreciate your time..
