Not a Knockout

Question

Sorry if this has been posted before however I couldn't find it. I am doing a knockout effect, but it just disappears when I take the fill down. I tried do this grouped and ungrouped. I am sure it's a simple fix but not sure what it is. Here is a recorded screen shot...

The default behavior of Knockout is to reveal the Background layer. So the top layer is punching through both the white layer and the colorful layer.

In order to reveal something other than the Background, you have to put the knockout layer in a group and the layer you want to reveal as the first one below and outside of the group.
