Question

Odd behavior with clone stamp offset

27.0.0 release as well as 27.1 beta (20251022.m.3267)
Win11 24H2 build 26120.5751
Using the clone stamp tool, and clicking the "use same offset for each stroke" to the off position, I get an unexpected result.
Starting with this image, I set the hardness of the brush to 100% to illustrate the issue.
I can CTRL+click to set the area to be cloned. Then moved it up to stamp it.

From there, I would expect each stamp to replicate that same stamp.

Instead, I get this for each subsequent stamp:

The progression is extremely odd depending on the amount of area cloned but no matter how I go about it, the first stamp is fine but each subsequent stamp is the same.

Switching to a 0 percent hardness is similar except the area stamped is lighter.

And even if the bottom area is clipped, it still does the same:

What's really bizarre is that the additional area pasted is slighly offset to the left.

But it gets weirder. It's not consistent. I can closed PS and re-open and repeat the same thing and the amount of extra area stamped will be slightly more or less.
It could be that I'm doing something wrong or have a setting that's changed on me but I don't remember this being the case in the past. Sadly I don't know where or when it began. I installed a couple old versions to test and even back to a 2024 version it does it. I just don't remember it doing this. If it's a setting I don't recall changing it and it shouldn't have done it with a freshly installed older version. What am I missing?

Hi @sleerfnivek, thanks so much for reaching out!

I gave this a try on my end but wasn’t able to reproduce the issue. As a first step, it might help to reset your Photoshop preferences. Just a heads-up, this will return the app to its default state, so be sure to back up any custom brushes, workspaces, or other settings beforehand.

If the issue keeps happening, would you be able to share a screen recording of your workflow showing the full screen? That would really help us take a closer look.

Thanks again!

Alek

Thanks for reaching out.

I thought this was odd but was starting to think I'd lost my marbles. Lol

I generally run the beta, so I originally began the post as a beta trouble report.... I'd never noticed this behavior before...
I rebooted and it persisted. So I checked the release version. It too was doing this.

So I ran a chkdsk, sfc /scan now, and DISM and rebooted again... Still the same ..

So, I went on Adobe CC and found PS 2025 and installed it. When I ran it, I found nearly, but not exactly, the same behavior. I then installed PS 2023 which also had nearly the same behavior, but it was less pronounced.

So I was starting to think I'd lost my mind and that the tool just functions differently from what I remembered. Lol

So again, thank you for reaching out. It's good to know that it shouldn't be behaving this way.

So yeah, I'd certainly be willing to share my screen. But before that, I'll do some more troubleshooting.

When running multiple versions like this, are there files shared among them? If so, that could limit the possible causes.

I think tonight I'll create a new user on my PC and install there to see if it persists across users.

Let me give that a shot and then if I can't work it out we can dig deeper.

Thanks!

Hi @sleerfnivek

Thank you for the detailed follow-up. Your additional testing is very helpful. Please try the following so we can narrow this down further.

• Test under safe mode to rule out any third-party interference.
• Confirm if the issue occurs with both Use Graphics Processor enabled and disabled under Preferences Performance.

• If possible, share a short screen recording showing the entire interface so we can inspect the brush preview, the Clone Source panel, and the cursor behavior.

Photoshop installations do not share core functional files across versions; however, certain settings can be carried over at the user account level. I think your plan to test with a new user account is a good next step.

Once you have completed the tests mentioned, please check the new user account and the ones I shared above. Let us know what changes you find, and we can forward the findings to the product team.
