Photomerge and Image Stack not working

Hello, hoping for some help and pointers if I'm doing something wrong here!

 

First time trying to stitch an image together from a series of images. This is a series of 12 scans across a painting to create one larger, highly detailed image. I've tried to use both Photomerge and the Load Files into Stack script, in both options I load the images under browse and once they're listed in the Files box, click OK but then the box just closes and nothing happens.

I work directly off of OneDrive so wondered initially if this was an issue with it loading from a cloud drive, I've then saved the images into a folder on my Desktop and loaded from there but get the same result. When loading the images it takes quite a while to do that but each image is between 1-1.6MB so these aren't huge image files. Am I missing something or is this just a broken feature in my version? Is anyone else getting this issue in the latest version of Photoshop?

I'm on a Mac running Sequoia 15.3.2, Photoshop version 26.5.0

This should work, many people use Photomerge this way. In Photomerge, although Auto should work, for this type of merging the Collage or Reposition option is more appropriate for just merging tiles of flat artwork.

 

Just some questions that might help isolate the problem and troubleshoot:

 

What file format are the images being merged?

 

Does each image open successfully in Photoshop if opened by itself?

 

How much overlap was scanned along the edges of each scan? I can see it failing if there isn’t enough overlap for Photoshop to figure out which scans have common edges, but if that happened an error message probably should have appeared.

Hi @Wildebeastly. I see you don't have any replies yet, sorry about that! How much available RAM and free scratch space do you have available on your Mac? You can find this out under Edit > Preferences > Performance and Scratch Disks.

These are the steps to follow. Are you doing it this way?

  • Go to File > Automate > Photomerge... and select the images you want to stitch together. Choose the Auto option in the layout settings, which will automatically analyze and align the images.
  • Adjust Settings: Make sure to check the Blend Images Together option to ensure a seamless blend between the images. You can also enable Vignette Removal and Geometric Distortion Correction if necessary.
  • Review the Result: Once the stitching process is complete, review the merged image. Adjust any areas that need refinement, such as removing scanner edges or shadows.
  • Flatten the Image: After ensuring all the scans are seamlessly stitched together, flatten the image by selecting Layer > Flatten Image to create a single layer.
