Photop cannot open files or close after upgrading to GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

Having an issue that's been driving me absolutely nuts for months- upgraded my GPU to a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and ever since, Photoshop has been unable to open files or, once you've tried to open a file, open anything (menu windows e.g. preferences) or even close the program. Initially, trying ot open the file just fails, nothing happens- then, after that, trying to do anything else returns a generic "Could not complete your request because of a program error"

Uninstalling Photoshop, deleting the preferences file and reinstalling will allow Photoshop to function normally- but only on the first use. Close the program and reopen and you're back to square one. I've tried updating everything, I've tried uninstalling Creative Cloud using the Adobe Cleaner tool, I've tried uninstalling and doing a clean install the GPU drivers and I've tried just about every solution I can find on the forum- nothing seems to work EXCEPT disabling the GPU entirely in the preferences (you can access them if you do this before you try toopen a file).

I have no other issues with any other programs apart from photoshop- the closest thing I can find on the forum is https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/photoshop-won-t-open-any-files/m-p/9016797 from 2017

Not a great solution- I'm a graphic artist and I need these things to play nice together. Help!

I have a same problem. I have new Lenovo Legion Slim 5 laptop with RTX 4070. Only thing I have upgraded is memory from 16gb to 32gb. Photoshop worked all right for first two months, but then suddenly this problem appears. I think it happended first time when I run out off battery and had to start the laptop again with power cable connected. I can use Photoshop now only by going to Edit-Preferences-Performance and deselecting Use Graphics Processor. I don´t know if this is in any way connected, but I have had lots of problems in 3Ds Max with this laptop, when its connected to second screen with different resolution. For example menus not opening or menu opens in other side of the screen where it should be and so on.

did you ever get this fixed? I have an RTX 4070 and i'm facing the exact same problems as you are. I even tried going through different installations and none of them work.

First, have you updated the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti driver?

The alternative is to try another GeForce RTX 4070 or a 3070 to see if this corrects the issue. Likely an incompatibility issue between the MB, the RTX, and PS. Mysteries at work!

Hey, @tornkin. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out.

You've done most of the troubleshooting steps. Try these three series of steps without launching Photoshop.

1. Set Photoshop.exe & Sniffer.exe to use Nvidia GPU only in Nvidia control panel: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/set-up-gpu-for-high-performance-in-photoshop-quick-tip/td-p/13504734

2. Ensure Photoshop is in the default state, go to the location of the preference folder below, and rename it to backup. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

    • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
    • Press Windows + R & type this is the Run Window - %APPDATA%\Adobe

    • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2023 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2023. old)

The GPU info and logs location on Windows is %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw. A shortcut to get to this folder on Windows is:

  • Press the Windows + R
  • Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw
  • Rename the GPU & Logs folder in this directory by adding .old at the end. (GPU.old & Logs.old)
  • Launch Photoshop now.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hi, apologies for the delayed reply- a lot of things going on for me right now.

Unfortunately this seems to work for the first time you open Photoshop, and then something behind the scenes breaks and we're back to square one*. Uninstalling and then reinstalling Photoshop and wiping the preferences that way, during the uninstall process, has the same effect. So does uninstalling all adobe products and running the cleaning tool. Whatever is causing the issue, it's coming in after the first time you run Photoshop for the first time.

@tornkin do you use the Studio or Game Ready driver, Adobe recommends the Studio version, have you tried downgrading the GPU driver

Thanks- The studio driver, although I've tried both, and I've downgraded to an older version to (although this has always caused problems since I started using the new GPU- so there's not e.g. a "working point" I can roll it back to).
