Photoshop 2020 Freezing My Entire System

Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with a major issue in Photoshop 2020. During basic tasks like editing two or three photos, my entire system freezes — even the shut down and task manager stop responding. I have to force shutdown the system every time to get it back to normal.

 My System Specs:

• Photoshop Version: 2020

• GPU: RTX 4060 8GB

• RAM: 32GB (16×2)

• Processor: Intel Core i7

• Storage: SSD (Photoshop is installed on SSD)

• Scratch Disk: Assigned to 😧 drive (with 250 gb free space available )

Why are you using a five year old Photoshop version?

Please post the full Help > System Info from Photoshop.

Hi D Fosse,

Thanks for responding

I’m using Photoshop 2020 because it’s the version provided by my college under our current license. I understand it’s outdated, but unfortunately, upgrading isn’t an option for me right now.

As requested, I’ve attached my full System Info below.

Let me know if you spot anything unusual that could be causing the freezing issue.

Do you get an error message? If yes, please post the message word-by-word.

Which operationg system do you use?

Check if your system is up-to-date. Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver? Make sure that you are using the recent Studio version of the driver, not the Game Ready version.

Try to reset the preferences of Photoshop using the steps described here:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#reset-preferences

It's recommended to backup your settings before resetting the preferences.

See here:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#backup-photoshop-preferences

If his doesn't help, provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the Photoshop menu item Help > System Info. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

Hi, thank you all for your help and quick responses. I’ve gathered the info you asked for and here’s a quick update:

OS: Windows 11

CPU: Intel i7

RAM: 32 GB (16×2)

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 (8 GB)

Photoshop Version: 2020 (v21.2)

The issue I’m facing is that even during basic work like editing two photos, my whole system completely freezes. There's no error message — even the shutdown button becomes unresponsive, and I have to force power-off the PC to get it working again.

I understand that Photoshop 2020 is outdated, but this is the version provided by my college under our current license, so upgrading isn’t possible right now.

Based on your suggestions, I will:

Switch from the Game Ready Driver to the Studio Driver for my RTX 4060.

Disable GPU acceleration in Photoshop settings.

Reset Photoshop preferences to default.

I’m attaching the full System Info below as requested.

Please let me know if you notice anything unusual in the log.

Thanks again for your support — I truly appreciate the guidance!
