Photoshop 2025/26 seems to go in software mode by default

Hello hello,

I don’t know why, but for the past couple of months Photoshop 2025/26 has been stuck in Software Rendering by default, and nothing I try seems to fix it. The GPU mode remains locked on Software.

I installed Photoshop 2021 to try and it runs smoothly with no issues.

I reinstalled Photoshop from scratch, reset the preferences, updated my drivers, checked that GPU acceleration was enabled, tried multiple options and configurations, ran it as administrator, and even checked several Nvidia settings. Nothing changes. My drivers are all up to date, including the one for my RTX 3070 Laptop. I am on Windows 11.

This issue doesn’t occur on my other laptop. And as mentioned, Photoshop 2021 runs smoothly with no problem on the same one.

I’m running out of options. Could you help me? Thank you!

Yes, as we suspected, dual GPUs. Disable the Intel UHD completely.

@D Fosse so I do have access to Camera and everything. It's just than, idk, my interface is kinda turning slower? Or like having lag. It's very noticeable when I pan my view or when I use a brush, it's not smooth like it use to be. And that only happen with recent Photoshop, all my other softwares (en PS 2021), Adobe or not, run smooth, my integrated graphic chipset seems like already turned off

For why its happening now @Vincent_Brachmanski5485 - you should expect newer updates to utilize more resources as software becomes more dependent on GPU especially with AI intergrations. Not just Photoshop but across the board.

@Kevin Stohlmeyer yep, on laptop this can happen but I don't understand why specially now after 2 years? And it doesn't happen on the 2021 PS version I tried.

The GPU mode remains locked on Software.

Not sure where you see that, but it's not what the problem is. If the GPU isn't operational you'll be locked out of a lot of functions (among them Camera Raw), but it's unlikely that you'll notice general slowdowns in the functions that do still work.

As Kevin suggests, this is almost certainly conflicting dual GPUs. That's a well known problem with laptops, and the advice is to disable the integrated GPU. There is no way for Photoshop to control which GPU is called, this is entirely at the mercy of how the laptop manufacturer has configured the operating system and the two GPU drivers. Dual graphics is designed for simple applications that just send data downstream in a one-way flow. But that's not how Photoshop works.

@Vincent_Brachmanski5485 go to Photoshop Help Menu/System info and copy and paste the results.

Normally with laptops there are two GPUs - and depending on load/battery power, etc the OS will hot swap between your Nvidia card and a lesser card or in this case perhaps software rendering. The report will help narrow it down.

Oh and I forgot to give an extra intel that is very funny. Sometime, it just work fine, like it can even happen that I have 3 or 4 PS windows open and all run in Software, except on that seems to work all fine and all smooth in GPU mode, I have absolutely nooo clue why.
