Photoshop 2026 Extremely Laggy on MacBook Pro M5 with 48gb Memory

Question

I recently bought a brand new MacBook Pro M5 with 48gb of working memory. Every app I use on a daily basis for work has been smooth, fast, and seamless- except Photoshop. It is consistently laggy. I’ll make a brush stroke and it will show up on the screen 5+ seconds later. I will click on the layers tab and it takes 4+ seconds to register.

I currently have the memory usage set to 70%. I tried upping the memory and turning on and off some Graphics Processors settings, but that did not help.

Yesterday, I was working on a 8”x10” file at 400 dpi with about 6 layers. I had only been working on that file for 20 minutes max. I went to Activity Monitor and Photoshop was taking up a whopping 16.09gb!!

I removed and redownloaded Photoshop last week and am still experiencing this extreme lag.

I use Photoshop for work and it has become nearly unusable. Please help! 🙏
