Photoshop 2026 Generative Upscale giving black image layers

On my work machine, the PS 2026 won't upscale using any of the three models avaialbe. They all produce a new file at the size chosen with the "Original" as the bottom layer, and the layer above that is supposed to be the upscaled version is just a black layer with a layer mask. The actual image is just a flat black color. When I try this on my personal version at home, it works as intended. What gives?

I reset my preferences and restarted my computer and that fixed it. So, I'd try restarting first, and if that doesn't work, reset the prefs.

i have re-downloaded app, reset preferences and restarted computer. it still isn’t working

Hi ​@KHULIHAN,

Thanks for reaching out and trying the steps. Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Check your color profile: Go to Edit > Assign Profile and ensure your document has a profile assigned (e.g., sRGB IEC61966-2.1). If it says "Don't Color Manage This Document," that's likely the cause.
     
  • Check Color Settings: Go to Edit > Color Settings and verify:
  1. The working space RGB is set to a valid profile (sRGB or Adobe RGB)
  2. "Color Management Policies" is set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles."
  3. Check if "Ask When Opening" is enabled for Profile Mismatches

  • Try a different upscale model: If you're using the "Partner model", try the Firefly model to see if the issue is model-specific.

  • Test with a known-good file: Open any JPEG/PNG with an embedded color profile and try Generative Upscale on that.

If that doesn’t help, could you please share:

  • Photoshop System Info. Help > System Info. Copy & paste it here.
  • A small screen recording of the issue.

That will help us investigate further and escalate if needed.

Hello - I’m having the same issue as the OP.  I’ve tried all of the steps in this discussion, but nothing has fixed it.  Here is my system info and recording:

I reset my preferences and restarted my computer and that fixed it. So, I'd try restarting first, and if that doesn't work, reset the prefs.

Thanks for reporting this! It might be related to how the image background or color profile is being handled. Could you please try running Generative Upscale on a different image (preferably one without a black or dark background) and see if the same issue occurs? 

Also, if possible, please also share the image you’re testing with so we can try to reproduce the issue on our end.
