Photoshop Alt + spacebar changes brush opacity to 40% ... Is this a bug?

Alt + Spacebar that make brush opacity 40% …  I never ever had this issue before … then about a month ago I updated after a long time to 2025 & 2026. This is issue is with both. Again this was never a thing before.

Is it a Bug or a supposed to be "new feature"? If so, is there any way to disable it, what is it, why is it so?

No where can I find any mention of Alt + Spacebar making brush opacity 40% … so why is it so?

I need spacebar to navigate finely & obviously need Alt as well, it’s become a nightmare trying to work this way with everytime having to turn opacity Back to 100%

I tried using “H” Hand tool instead, but then it gives me the “Bird’s eye view” which is not suitable for fine navigation where I do not want to zoom out … is there any way to disable the “Birds Eye View”?

    Thanks for reporting this. I tried replicating the behavior on my end, and Alt + Spacebar does not change brush opacity at my end. It works as expected:

    • Alt + Spacebar = temporary Zoom Out (negative zoom)

    • Spacebar = temporary Hand tool for navigation

    • H = Hand tool 

    So what you're describing isn’t standard behavior and is not a new feature. To help narrow this down, could you please share:

    1. System info from Photoshop Help menu (Help> System Info > Copy paste it here)

    2. Are you using a custom keyboard shortcut set?

    3. Are you using a tablet (Wacom, Huion, etc.) with custom key mappings?

    4. Does the opacity field actually change to 40% in the Options bar when you press Alt + Space?

    It’s possible due to the following reasons:

    • A corrupted preference file

    • A custom shortcut conflict

    • A tablet driver assigning 40% opacity

    • A stuck modifier key

    • Or a workspace/tool preset issue

     

    The first thing I would suggest trying is resetting preferences for Photoshop. Before doing this, please create a back up. Steps are shared here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/get-started/settings-and-preferences/backup-and-restore-preferences.html

    After resetting, test Alt + Spacebar again before changing any settings.  Let me know the details above and what happens after the reset.

      Thanks for your rely and assistance.

       

      I am quite surprized to hear you were not able to replicate it. I guess the good news in that is it hopefully is something my side that can be fixed without waiting for an update.

       

      I’ll paste the system info below.

      I don’t think I have any custom key shortcuts, however I Reset the whole PS app to it’s default settings, then tried, but the problem was still there.

      I also thought it was maybe a Wacom issue, but then I disconnected the Wacom and tried Alt + Spacebar on my wired Keyboard, and the same issue happened still … so assuming then it is not the Wacom.

      And yes the change happens in the actual options bar at the top, opacity changes to 40%.

      hile drawing suddenly my brush opacity jumps to 40% ... often ... for days googling trying to find out what's going on, but nothing found. I today realized then it happens when I click Alt and then Spacebar > brushes goes Straight to 40%!

      I never had this before in PS. I thought it might be my Wacom, so I got another wacom to try it out and same thing. I also tried 2 different versions (2025 & 2026) and still same thing. Well I discovered it's not Wacom, because it does same on Keyboard itself.

      Is it a Bug or a supposed to be "new feature"?

      If anyone knows of this, experiences this & has any idea how to fix/disable this, Please le me know.
