Question

Photoshop and Lightroom extremely slow

For the last year and with the latest updates I've experienced an awful behavior with both Photoshop and Lightroom. Both programs are extremely slow. I experimented with performance settings on both programs (enabling/disabling GPU, memory increase, etc.) but had no effect. This is the most laggy and slow experience I have ever had with those programs. I am thinking of suspending my subscription to Adobe, because I am almost unable to work with this software.

Lightroom:

Panels are laggy. When switching across modules, sometimes the panels can't load for a several second or freeze. All operation in Lightroom, like filtering images, browsing images, switching between modules and panels, are very slow. Luckily the sliders in Develop mode are working well.

Photoshop:

Brush is insanely slow. When I draw with a big brush, it can take half a minute just to draw from one side to the other of the canvas. Opening files, switching between open canvases, or even closing files and closing Photoshop itself is very slow. When I open an image from Lightroom to Photoshop it sometimes takes up to 15 seconds to perform this action.

All those actions are performed under a PC in good health and Windows with the latest updates and I confirmed that no background tasks are running that could consume resources or slow work.

  • Platform: Windows 10 Enterprise (1909 build:18363)

  • Photoshop 21.2

  • Lightroom Classic 9.3

  • PC Configuration:

    • RAM 32GB
    • CPU Intel i5
    • SSD

I'm experiencing similar problems. I've mostly noticed it since the update to Lightroom 9.3.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro so naturally I don't expect it to be super fast but prior to 9.3 I could at least do most editing at a reasonable pace and the adjustment brush could keep up with near real time showing of the overlay. Since 9.3 there's been a definite drop in responsivness. The adjustment brush has become quite laggy and the cooling fans in the laptop spin up almost as soon as I enter the develop module. It's making my editing sessions longer than they need to be and that's accounting for the age of the machine. I have 16gb of RAM, SSD drives and don't run other apps while editing. On MacOs Catalina.

I was going to update my MacBook soon but then Apple announced the new Apple Silicon machines and showed them running a super speedy Photoshop and said Adobe were right on board re-coding the Creative Cloud Suite to match. So I've pushed my laptop update plans back a few months and really want Lightroom to be usable until then.

I'm loving the new Hue adjustment brush in 9.3 but would downgrade to a previous versions to get back some speed.

Any helpful suggestions would be welcome.
