Question

Photoshop can't load metadata library message; can't edit file info

I installed the latest updates for bridge and Photoshop 2024 (25.12.0) on my imac, which is running MacOS Big Sur 11.7.10. When I went to edit some file info, I get a message
"Could not complete the File Info command because the Metadata library could not be loaded."

I can edit the file info using bridge, but it's tedious, because it doesn't remember the past info I've entered in previous files. I put a lot of the same descriptions in for photos intended as stock and liked doing it in Photoshop. I have tried simple uninstall and re-install (but keeping preferences) with no effect. I don't see any old messages about this particular error, except in a version of Elements. I can't install Photoshop v26 because my 2017-era mac doesn't support the latest OS that requires.

Thank you. I put both the photoshop state text file and the screenshot of the error message in a dropbox folder:

Hi @Howard Sandler,

Thanks for reaching out. To investigate this issue further, could you please share a screenshot of the error message along with one of the files you’re trying to edit? Additionally, it would be helpful if you could go to Photoshop > Help > System Info, copy the details into a text file, and upload it to a sharing service like Google Drive, Dropbox, or WeTransfer. Please share the link here once it’s ready.

With this information, we can better understand what might be causing the issue with your setup.

Looking forward to your response!

Best regards,

Anshul Saini

I'm having the same issue, Mac OS 11.7.10.  Disaster! I must be able to put my copyright notice in metadata!

Hi @Guy5FF3,

Thanks for reaching out. I completely understand how critical metadata editing is, especially for copyright notices.

The latest versions of Photoshop no longer fully support macOS Big Sur (11.7.10). Our current updates and bug fixes are designed to work with macOS Monterey (12) or newer. Unfortunately, no future fixes are expected for outdated systems.

To restore full functionality—including the File Info/metadata features—we strongly recommend upgrading your macOS to Monterey or later (if your device supports it). This will ensure that Photoshop's latest version works and continues receiving full support and fixes.

Let me know if you need help checking whether your Mac can upgrade, or with anything else.

Best,

Anshul Saini
