Question

Photoshop canvas display unstable when Window 11 HDR mode is turned on

Bug summary:

Turning on HDR mode in Windows causes the Photoshop canvas display area to become unstable editing HDR (32-bit) files whenever the cursor moves into the main canvas area.

Details:

I have been using Photoshop on my system for a long while without any problem. I just upgraded to an HDR monitor, so turned on Windows HDR mode.

If I open a 16-bit (non HDR) image file, everything is fine.

If I open a 32-bit HDR image file then each time I move the cursor within the main canvas area the entire screen goes black, flashes a few times, and after not moving the mouse for 2-3 seconds restores to the proper appearance. Each time I move the mouse, this repeats until I move the mouse out of the main canvas area when everything is OK again.

While my screen is flashing, my monitor displays a Dolby Vision popup on the bottom right that I otherwise only see when the monitor is switching into HDR mode. This makes me think that the instability may be related to the display moving out of and into HDR mode as the mouse is moved.

I see the same response if I load a 16-bit image and then use Image->Mode->32bit to switch to that mode.

Turning off Windows HDR mode does not show the problem even if I edit an HDR image or switch to 32-bit mode.

Selecting Preferences -> Technology Previews -> Older GPU mode does work to avoid the problem, but I do have a recent DirectX12 capable graphics card running the latest Nvidia driver so I should not need to give up the GPU-enabled capabilities.

System details:

Adobe Photoshop Version: 26.8.1 20250624.r.8 5e0d05d  x64
Windows 11 Pro, 24H2 OS Build 26100.4652
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:14, Stepping:13, AVX2, HyperThreading
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
Driver Version 32.0.15.7680 (NVIDIA Studio Driver version 576.80)

Any help would be much appreciated!

Martin

I first reported this on the community discussion board back in July and saw one response but no solution. https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/photoshop-canvas-display-unstable-when-window-11-hdr-mode-is-turned-on/td-p/15419170#M125231

I have tested on every Photoshop release since then but the problem is still the same. Any suggestions for debugging or fixing this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Martin

Hi @marting45371320, thanks for reaching out!
When you get a chance, could you share a screen recording of the issue? That’ll help us take a closer look and better understand what’s going on.
Also, if you're using G-Sync, try heading to the NVIDIA Control Panel, go to "Set Up G-Sync" under the Display section, and uncheck the "Enable G-SYNC" box. Then click Apply to save the changes.
Let us know how it goes!

Hi Aleke,

Thanks for your quick response.

I tried using the Windows snipping tool to capture a screen recording.
Photoshop showed the usual flickering in the canvas as I moved the mouse,
but playing back the screen capture did not show any flicking or unusual
behavior. Link to screen capture video
<>. If there is a different
screen capture tool that I should try, let me know.

I'm not using G-Sync. I have installed the Studio (non-gamer) NVIDIA
package and I don't see anything about a G-Sync option in the NVIDIA
Control Panel (screenshot below).

Thanks,
Martin

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave. I did a clean install of Studio driver 566.36, rebooted, and confirmed in the NVidia control panel that this version was now installed. Unfortunately it made no difference to the problem.

I cannot test here, as my monitors are SDR. However, there were recently some issues in Adobe 3D Sampler which required roll back to an earlier NVidia release. Can you try rolling back to Studio driver 566.36 and see if that helps.
When installing choose advanced options - then Clean install to ensure that the previous driver is overwritten.
