Photoshop CC Mac cursor bug

This is a long standing bug in Photoshop CC.

When Photoshop CC is running on a Mac, and files are open, Photoshop CC will continually change the mouse cursor to an arror cursor even when Photoshop is not the foreground app. In fact, this will happen even if Photoshop is on a separate screen/workspace. As long as Photoshop is running and at least one file is open, no matter what app you have in the foreground, no matter what you are doing in any other app, the mouse cursor will continually change inappropriately to the default arrow. Even if the foreground app changes the cursor, Photoshop changes it back.

Please, please, please, if Photoshop is not the foreground app, do not keep changing the cursor!

This has been an issue for like 4-5 years. For what we all pay Just fix the bug already 🙎

I see cursor issues with a Wacom tablet, moving the cursor over the status area (lower left) will change the cursor to an I-beam instead of the painting tool cursor. I haven't seen problems with it changing in other apps.

Adding my voice. I have unpredictable cursor behavior when Photoshop is open, and it's not confined within photoshop. My cursor glitches in Finder, my web browser, and any other app.. It usually takes 10 minutes or so before things get wonky. I've had *some* success purging the cache in Photoshop and closing all of my open documents (which is partly why I think this issue is more directed at Adobe than Apple) , but it doesn't always work. Even after quitting Photoshop, it's not gauranteed the cursor issues will resolve; I had to quit all other applications running as well, which then calmed my pointer down. But it only happens when I'm using Photoshop. It's worse when both Photoshop and Illustrator are running (seems to happen quicker).

This is a huge time suck over a work day. I'm going to have to reset my Macbook and hope that it solves it--I've read online that certain fonts can cause cursor issues (doesn't make sense to me but I'll try anything at this point), and I'm wondering if I've installed some app that is conflicting with Photoshop. But at the end of the day, this is a Photoshop/Mac issue. I'm sure there's a patch that either Apple or Adobe could release, but for the love of Pete, somebody please circle this issue on your whiteboard in the next developer meeting.

I will reply to my own post with a screen capture when it happens next. I wonder if part of the reason Adobe hasn't caught it is that it doesn't happen immediately. I'm trying to pinpoint a specific action in Photoshop or Illustrator that may be causing it.

Sorry for the multiple posts but I don't know how to edit my previous entry. I should mention that my cursor has weird/gross colors because I found a setting in the Mac preferences that let me change colors; I randomly chose those colors as a joke, but this issue was occuring before that. I don't have an app installed that affects cursor colors.

This is till happening on my Mac and it is highly annoying. Cannot work with Photoshop and any other graphics/editing app at the same time.

This has been going on for more than a year. Please do find a solution.

If it helps, I am using Logitech mice using the unifying device. Seems those are more commonly affected by these glitches.

I have been having this issue on 4 different Macs (1 iMac and 3 Macbook Pro's) for at least 10 years.

By now it's just a reminder for me to close down Photoshop.

Unbelieveable that

A: It has been going on for so long without a fix

and

B: That Adobe apparently are not having the issue themselves.

Or perhaps they just don't notice/care?

I first saw this in the first version of Photoshop CC. It happens on all my Macs, including an Intel iMac 27"/core i9 and a 2016 Intel Macbook Pro. The easiest way to see it is to launch Photoshop, open a file, then launch a game such as World of Warcraft. The cursor will keep changing to the standard pointer inappropriately.

Hi,

I confirm, been having the same issue for as long as I remember on this machine. It happens only in Photoshop, other Adobe apps don't cause this issue, also when Photoshop is open sometimes the zoom by pinching fingers on touchpad function doesn't work correctly in any other app.

I have attached a screen recording of the cursor change happening.

My specs: Macbook Pro 2021 14 inch M1 Pro

Perhaps try resetting Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references.

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

[on MacOS see: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note for those on macOS: - be aware that the user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

In the Finder, open the “Go” menu whilst holding down the Option (Alt) key.

Library will now appear in the list - below the current user's “home” directory. ]

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe as a back-up of your settings.

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! Its worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

I don't see what you report on my Mac. The cursor behaves as it always had and does. You might want to check your System Preferences> Accessibility settings>Display>Pointer options.

Hi @tacit, thank you for sharing this. Curious, you say this is a long standing issue, how long, what version did you first notice this? We are not seeing what you are describing, so if you would do a short video of your screen and the mouse changes it would be very helpful.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I've been having this issue for a long time as well, somtimes more noticible then other times, and happens in Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign.
