Photoshop color management bug on MacOS, one year later + work around

Hey there!

It's been more than a year since my old iMac 2013 died and I invested into a new Mac to find out Photoshop was unusable due to a specific bug that messes up the colors. Shadows clip, colors get desaturared etc etc.

This was one of the threads were a lot of troubleshooting was done, but to no avail https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/photoshop-not-showing-correct-colors-update-after-3-weeks-of-troubleshooting/td-p/14600182/page/2

Needless to say, extremely disappointed in Adobe and Apple for not replying and/or helping out on the matter as I found, over time, that more and more people have this bug. Total damage for me is a couple of thousand euros and it brought me to tears at one point that these big companies are not interested at all to deliver a working product. (I know, big companies only care about profit, but one has to have hope right?)

But in the end, life goes on and it also brought some new insights in photographic post processing- I hadn't touched Lightroom in years, only to realise how much more efficient it got for commercial work as well as autonomic practices.

My workaround to still use PS, is through LR itself. I use LR as a catalog + raw converter to finetune my photographs as I would have done with Adobe Camera Raw. When I need to do extra touch up that isn't viable in LR I open up my image through the 'Edit in Photoshop' function and work my magic there. I do save an extra file as backup and then when it opens up back in LR it displays colors normally. From there I export my image without having weird color artifacts.

Of course, it's quite sh*tty to have a workaround while paying for applications that should work flawlessly for the amount of money/employees they have.. but I am happy that I got peace of mind now while shooting.

I would totally advise this workaround, as PS sometimes shows colors quite okayish, but from my own experience I can tell you it isn't fun at all when you find out that your printed work shows weird artifacts after you spent 900eu on a single framed work :')

Hope this helps for everybody struggling with this bug! 🙂

@riccknl I feel the pain.... I am an educator, and I am using a late 2013 MacBook Pro. So far so good, but, I also know many of my students are using the 2025 verson of Photoshop. Your workaround (Lightroom > Edit in Photoshop > Save > Return to LR > Export from LR) is probably one of the least disruptive and most reliable workarounds currently available for this specific color bug. You could, but .... a severe workaround could mean downgrading your Photoshop from 2025 to 2024, but you are sacrificing security updates, new features, and compatibility with other software. For many, it's simply not feasible. I am looking to upgrade my MacBook Pro — undecided to wait for M5 or just go in on the M4.
