Photoshop Count Tool - Numbers Disappear Instantly

I've used this tool for a long time without problems.  All of the sudden when I select the count tool and click on the screen, it shows the number for an instant and then it disappears.  The tool continues to count as I click, but I can't get it to display the numbers on the image.  I've reset the tool, updated photoshop - nothing helps.

Any ideas?

Did you also reset the complete Photoshop Preferences?

What are the View > … settings?

What is Count group color and oher settings in the Options Bar?

Have you tried restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved?

Here is a screen-shot of the settings. I have tried to change color, marker size, label size.  I have cleared count and started over.  I have "reset the tool".  Nothing working so far.

Also - when I click the "eye" on the count tool toolbar, it blinks the numbers for a micro-second and they they go blank again.

If interested in seeing what's happening - here is a link to a 45-second video clip where I am using the count tool and the numbers are blinking out. http://somup.com/cYeToX1jji

Does turning on Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Legacy Compositing and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
