Question

Photoshop Generative Fill

Hello,

I’ve been using Generative Fill since its release, and I feel that the results have gotten worse over time. At the beginning, it worked really well, but over the past year the output has become pretty bad—producing strange objects and random colors.

Am I doing something wrong?

Hi Greg.  I wonder, do you use the beta version?  It has some interesting new models to try on top of the two Firefly versions.  Check out this short video from Julieanne Kost to see how they work.

Hi @gregw67594617, It's no fun when the magic fades! Seriously, though, can you share any examples of your prompts and masking areas?

I agree that it seems to take a lot more refining to get Generative Fill to produce the results I am looking for. Here's what I've found helps. Make sure prompts are ultra-specific. You probably know this, but for others who don't, say you outline an area and prompt something like, “fill with a tree.” Instead, try “photorealistic oak tree with green leaves, matching the scene's daylight.” Using smaller masking areas helps, too. I almost always outline my selection using the Polygonal Lasso Tool to get more precise.

Finally, I've started to generate the element I want to add in Firefly first as a stand-alone image. Then, I download the image, remove the background if needed, and place the element into my image in Photoshop where I can resize and blend it in as needed. Of course, this doesn't work with all images. But it does give me a lot more flexibility. Let us know how it goes as you keep trying new things!

Many thanks for your tips ! I'm actually not precise enough and I use none specific prompt, like "fill with trees" or "erase". I'll try that ! Many thanks

Hey, @gregw67594617. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. Thanks for sharing the feedback. I'll help you figure this out. I checked the account you used for the community and found an active subscription.

Has this started to happen recently? Does this happen with specific images or subjects?

In newer versions of Photoshop, you can now toggle between the Firefly models in Generative Fill to get a variety of results. Each model has its own strengths.

I hope this helps. Thanks!
