Question

Photoshop is completely unusable on Win 11

Photoshop 27.4 and 27.5 are completely broken on Win 11 with an NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti. The app freezes when selecting the Remove Tool, changing any panels, or opening the New Document screen. On exit, it consistently hangs in the background and won't close on its own; you have to kill the process manually, which resets all setting changes.

Version 27.3.1 and below work as intended. Additionally, 27.4 and 27.5 work just fine on a PC with Win 10 and an AMD W5500. The issue seems to be specific to Win 11.

Estou aguardando faz tempo e nada ainda.

I am using NVIDIA Game Ready drivers, and  Studio drivers is also installed and enabled.

The latest photoshop doesn’t solve the problem. However, I found a workaround.  Here are steps:

    1. Open raw files with ACR,  using your default settings, only perform sharpen and denoise, the open the photo in photoshop;
    2. Then back to ACR from  photoshop using camera raw filter, everything works now,  mask and apply settings work smoothly.

Start with Photopea — it runs in the browser, requires no installation, and has almost all the features of Photoshop. It works fine on Win 11.

Unfortunately, the freezing error has recurred with the Remove Tool. I now seriously think this Tool has a memory leak.

Ok, I think I have solved this. You need to go into the Wacom option in the Control Panel and remove Ps and then re-add the latest version (it could be pointing to another version). Do the same in the “Wacom Center”. Then bluetooth does not cause a freeze. Fixed!

So Wacom has a drivers update.  I went in and updated the drivers to the Intuos Pro and then also there was a new Studio Driver for NVidia out this week. I updated that as well and I went a full day of work yesterday with no freeze.  I think we may be on to something with the Wacom...

AHA! Breakthrough. Like someone else in this or another thread about the Remove Tool and Ps hanging / freezing, I have discovered that by turning off my Wacom IntuosPro graphic pad (connected with Bluetooth), and use the mouse instead, the problem goes away, and Remove Tool functions normally.

I am now going to test whether the problem exists when the Wacom is connected by USB … sit tight.

Edit: the tablet works fine with USB cable, but when switched to bluetooth it freezes Ps after about 3-5 edits. Not sure why using BT would affect PS? I know you have to specify in the “Wacom Center” how you want to use the pen+tablet in Ps, so maybe that’s the issue?

I’ve just now installed 27.6 (with new Settings, not the old ones) … but same problem. Three ‘goes’ with the Remove tool, AI off, then a long wait with keyboard frozen, followed by:

This is a RAM exhaustion issue with Photoshop's Remove tool — even with AI off, it's very memory-hungry. This is the most important question. The Remove tool needs at least 8GB free to work properly.

If you have 8GB total RAM — Photoshop + Windows 11 alone uses 4-5GB, leaving almost nothing for editing.

I’m on Ps 27.5, newest version of Win11, newest Nvidia drivers (Studio). All updated in last week. Remove tool, used in Ps and not ACR, now hangs Ps after only a few strokes, with eventual message “Not enough RAM”. Using Remove tool on its own layer does not help. Unchecking Multithreaded compositing does not help. Unchecking GPU compositing does not help (Preferences > Performance > Graphics Processor advanced settings, uncheck GPU compositing).

I’m using a Wacom IntuosPro tablet as well, could be a factor.

The Remove Tool has had a memory leak now for over two years. It seems to come and go in severity, depending on the release version.

    @Aaah-Doh!-be

Do you have Generative AI on or off? Is the tool set to Faster or More Stable?

All generative AI is sent to Adobe’s servers for processing.

I’ve tested extensively on a big file (eventually covering most of the image) and I don’t see any problems. It’s responding entirely as I would expect. But that’s with AI off and More Stable.

AI off, more stable are my settings too.

    Hi @Dis5FFB @changdew81570515 @Tommyboy72,

Thanks for the additional details. Given what all of you are reporting, there’s a clear pattern emerging.

This is not expected behavior, and since multiple people can reproduce it, this needs proper escalation.

Before I take this to the product team, I need to confirm a couple of key things:

    • Are all of you currently on NVIDIA Game Ready drivers or Studio drivers?
    • If not already done, please switch to Studio Driver and test once
    • Also, please update to v27.6, which was released recently

    Also, please confirm:

    • Does disabling GPU fully (Preferences > Performance > OFF) stop the issue or not?
    • Does the issue still occur if Bridge is not involved (open directly in Photoshop)?

If possible, please share a short screen recording showing the freeze (especially the ACR masking and Alt+Tab case).

Also, please copy & paste your system info (Photoshop Help menu > System Info) and share a DxDiag report. Steps for DxDiag:

    • Press Windows key
    • Type dxdiag and press Enter
    • Wait for the tool to load
    • Click “Save All Information”
    • Save the DxDiag.txt file

Once I have all the info, I’ll consolidate it and escalate internally.

    Best,

Also when I turn off the GPU it helps it some..but.. then the system runs extremely hot and im not about to cook my motherboard for Adobe..

Same problem. The ACR is hanging, the synch icon keeps spining when I apply a mask preset.  I have updated my Windows 11 to to latest version, also update Nvidia drive, and VC++ redistributable. Make graphic card as Custom will simply freez the ACR.  This happens only after I updated to  Photoshop 27.5.0, ACR 18.3.0.2528.  Uninstall and re-install photoshop does not solve the problem. Following workaround posted online and from AI no help.  Does Adobe has qualified SW developers to use GPU ?  Versions before 2026 never take advantage of GPU.  Does Adobe layed off QAs? (since its latest update block me from using it, and I have no way to back to the previous working version). Ever since Version 2026, a lot of problems occurs time to time.

Im having the same issue.  Specifically when using brush masking in ACR.  It hangs for up to a minute and the dialogue box says “ Bridge is not responding” and gives me the option to wait or close.   Im also experiencing the issue where when I close bridge it just stays open in the background and I have to manually go in and kill it.
