Question

Photoshop is lagging / freezing with brand new Laptop

Photoshop works fine for a little bit (less then an hour), but eventually it starts lagging and then freezes. I've spent the past month trying everything I can think of to fix this, but nothing has worked.

Here's what I've tried:

  • Windows Graphics Settings: Set Photoshop to use the NVIDIA GPU.

  • NVIDIA Control Panel: Set Photoshop to use the NVIDIA GPU here as well.

  • Uninstalling bloatware: Removed McAfee, AI-related apps, and other unnecessary software.

  • Lenovo Vantage: Ran the built-in diagnostics for the CPU, GPU, fans, and other hardware. No issues were found.

  • Photoshop Performance Settings: Tried different settings, including reducing History States to 20, adjusting cache settings, allowing 70% to 90% RAM usage, and enabling the Graphics Processor and Multithreaded Compositing.

I've also followed the troubleshooting steps shown in videos like the one linked, but nothing has helped.

I'm stumped. My older desktop PC handles Photoshop just fine, yet my much newer laptop struggles with it. Other programs seem to run well, so the problem appears to be specific to Photoshop.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or what else I can try?

Laptop Specs: Lenovo Legion 7 16IAX10 (Legion 7i Gen 10 Intel (16”) with RTX 570)

  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX

  • RAM: 32GB

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070

  • OS: Windows 11

  • Storage: 954GB

    Hi @danny2000,

Thanks for sharing your system specifications and the troubleshooting you’ve already performed. I understand how frustrating this must be, especially with a brand-new laptop.

Since Photoshop works normally initially but gradually slows down and eventually freezes, I’d like to narrow down what’s happening rather than have you repeat the steps you’ve already tried.

Could you please check a few things?

    1. Does Photoshop slow down when your laptop is running on battery, connected to the original Lenovo wall charger, or both? High-performance Windows laptops can limit CPU and GPU performance when running on battery, even with large batteries.
    2. Are you using the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver or Game Ready Driver? Please share the driver version.
    3. When Photoshop starts slowing down, could you open Windows Task Manager > Processes and check Photoshop’s RAM usage? Under Performance > GPU, please also check the dedicated GPU memory usage. Does either increase significantly as Photoshop becomes unresponsive?
    4. Does this happen with every document, including a newly created blank document, or only when working with larger PSD/PSB files?

Please also share your Help > System Info > Copy from Photoshop so we can review your configuration.

Here are three additional resources worth checking:

Community guide: Configure Photoshop to use the high-performance GPU: https://community.adobe.com/questions-712/set-up-gpu-for-high-performance-in-photoshop-quick-tip-1149214?sort=oldestFirst#comments

Photoshop performance and freezing troubleshooting: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/desktop/troubleshoot/performance-stability-issues/fix-lag-freeze-slow-performance.html

    GPU troubleshooting: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/video/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card-video.html

Since you’ve already tried several GPU configuration changes without success, I’d like to review these details before recommending further changes.

Thanks for your patience and for working through this with us!

    Best,
    Anshul Saini
