Question

Photoshop keeps asking me to select a layer that's already selected

Hi everyone,

I work with mockup templates daily, and since around October 5, 2026, every time I double-click a Smart Object layer to edit it, Photoshop keeps showing this error:

"Select the Mockup base layer and try again."

The problem is that the layer is already selected, as you can see in the screenshot.

If it happened occasionally, I wouldn't mind, but it's happening constantly, and it's getting really frustrating. I rely heavily on shortcuts to speed up my workflow, and this keeps interrupting it.

Has anyone else been experiencing this since early October? Could a Photoshop update have caused this issue?

Has anyone found a fix?

    Hi @carolnitra

Thank you for reaching out and apologies for this experience. To help us narrow down the cause, could you please confirm a few details?

    1. Your exact Photoshop version and operating system version.
    2. Whether this happens with all mockup templates or only specific ones, and whether they come from the same provider.
    3. Whether you are double-clicking the Smart Object thumbnail itself in the Layers panel when the error appears.
    4. Whether you use any actions, scripts, or plugins with these mockups.
    5. Whether the issue began immediately after a Photoshop update.

As a quick test, please create a new document, add a regular pixel layer, convert it to a Smart Object, and double-click its thumbnail to open it. Let us know whether the same message appears. This will help distinguish a mockup-specific issue from a broader Smart Object editing problem.

@carolnitra, this could be a bug in the latest version. The solution another user found was to rename the layer to exactly what the error indicates. Try renaming your layer to “base” and see if it changes anything. More info here:

Thank you for your reply. I tried renaming the layer to “base,” but unfortunately, the error still persists
